PRESS FREEDOM MONUMENT

Pressed or Opressed?

I was amused by how beautiful the monument was. (WOW!) From what I have read from Sunstar, it was worth atleast 27 million bucks! (HOLY COW!) I wonder how did the local government spend on this one. never the less, I'm still amused from it! And well, 27 million bucks' a great bargain perhaps, knowing that a well know international scultpor made it-Eduardo Castrillo. Ring a bell? Well, if im not mistaken, he was responsible of the People Power Monument. Hail to the great Eduardo Castrillo!

While I was amused and standing at the front of the monument, two older men beside me where having a conversation about press freedom. The taller guy asserted, "Our country should have a free press." Well, as a young journalism studernt, I couldn't agree more. I could still remember how Ma'am Rach told us that the press is the "FOURTH ESTATE" which means that the role of the press in a democratic country like ours is to be our WATXHDOG-to try to present the truth.

The monument shows journalists reporting and holding on to a fallen colleague. Well, it only symbolizes how today's press are not independent from influences, which only shows that the press is losing its reason for existence. Well, restriction on the press in our country is absolutely well-known. Now, I wonder why did I took this course? LOL!

I think, this monument serves as a lesson. That our country is in need of many voices- Good Journalist. Because it is a fact that a good journalist plays a crucial role in helping to build this we so called democratic country of ours.

So, let us uphold Press Freedom! MAKIBAKA!!!
